I just booked my flights to Taiwan. Yes, flights! I leave on July 25th, stay until August 19th, return for my daughter Sara's wedding and return on the 24th. Crazy but worth it. Three 24 hour flights in a month. I can do it, right?
The whole reality of moving to Taiwan hit me last week. As I finalized my work papers, dealt with movers/shipping and started selling my furniture, I realized that this is really happening! I know I will miss my girls and friends but I am so sure that this is the right thing for me and is going to be quite the adventure. Now I have to start learning some Mandarin so I can communicate a little when I get there.
Deciding to teach overseas has been such a journey already. Juggling one job while thinking of another, leaving one home while planning on living in another that I will not see or know until I actually step into for the first time, and deciding what to keep and what to sell. Will I be able to deal with the heat and humidity of Taiwan? Will mosquitoes love me as much there as here? God, I hope not! Will the sheer number of people in Kaohsiung get to me? I mean, almost 2 million people in the city. That's way more than all the people who live in the entire state of Maine. Crazy!
I'm lucky in that I like change and learning about new places, foods and cultures. Haha, that's a good thing since I'm be moving to about as different a place and culture as I could pick. I'm sure I'll have quite the adventures to share in the future. Stay tuned.
